Operatives - v0.0.8

Live tonight - 15/06/26 @ 9pm BST.

This is the big one. Up to now Breachlands has been a game about force - train an army, send it at someone, hold the line when they send theirs back. v0.0.8 adds a second layer underneath all of that: espionage. It's the largest feature I've shipped, and it changes how the whole game is played once you reach it.

What espionage is

Force is loud. Espionage is quiet. Once your HQ reaches level 3 you can build The Watch and start recruiting operatives - spies that move faster than any raiding force and work without anyone seeing them coming.

You send a spy at a rival to learn things. Scout their base and you build a dossier - what they're holding, what they're building, where the soft spots are. Shadow a raid that's inbound to you and you get warning instead of a nasty surprise. How much you bring back depends on how cleanly the spy works, which is where it gets interesting.

Operations you run, not jobs you queue

The part I'm most pleased with: a spy mission isn't fire-and-forget. Your operative embeds, and then you decide what they do tick by tick - gather more intel, sabotage something, or get out - while a Detection Meter climbs the whole time. Stay longer for deeper intel and you're gambling with getting caught. Pull out early and your operative's safe but you've learned less. When it goes wrong you can call a manual extraction, sacrifice the squad to save the haul, or lose someone for good.

It all lives in a new Intel hub - plan the operation, read the dossiers, manage the roster, all in one place. I rebuilt that surface several times to get it to feel right, and the operation loop itself got a second pass after the first version played flat in testing.

Spies that grow, and spies that get caught

Operatives earn experience and climb a Tradecraft tree, so a veteran is genuinely better than a fresh recruit - quieter, sharper, better kitted. Every node tells you what it does before you spend on it.

And because everyone can do this, everyone is doing it to you. You assign counter-spy handlers to watch your base and intercept incoming operatives, and higher tradecraft lets you play dirty - decoys and forgery to feed attackers bad intel, topped off by a Smoke & Mirrors capstone if you want to be properly hard to read.

The honest caveats

This is a big, new system landing all at once, and it's alpha. The numbers - detection rates, intel tiers, perk costs - are knobs I will keep turning as I watch people play. It's been through a proper review and security pass before reaching you, but the balance is interim by definition. If a mission feels impossible to pull off, or trivially easy, that's exactly the feedback I need.

One thing that's not espionage but you'll notice: trap charges now count towards your army power, so that number may read differently than you remember. That's the rebalance landing, not a bug - and I've capped how many charges stack so defences stay sane. New players also get a smoother opening; the tutorial paces predictably now instead of stretching with the live clock.

Go build The Watch. Go find out what your neighbours are hiding. And tell me where it breaks.
