Last week Breachlands got a world. This week you get a reason to go out into it and dig. v0.0.10 adds a third resource - Breach Shard - and the whole loop around pulling it out of the ground: prospecting by hand, forward outposts that mine at scale, and a new tier of Concord units that eat shards to build. If Open Alpha was about spreading across the map, Breaking Ground is about what's worth going out there for.
A resource you mine, not one you make
Salvage and Ore tick over on their own - build the right structures and they fill while you're away. Breach Shard doesn't work like that. Nothing produces it passively. The only way the number moves is by mining it out of the world, and each base banks it up to a cap. I wanted a resource that rewards showing up and doing something, not one more meter that fills itself. It sits at the top of the economy: rarer, harder-won, and the gate on the best things you can build.
Prospect it by hand first
The way in is the Prospector. Train one, send it to a breach node on the map, and you run an overheat mini-game to extract - lean on the rig for more yield, but lean too hard and it cooks and you lose the run. It's deliberately hands-on. Early game, this is your shard faucet, and how much you get out of it depends on how well you play the extraction rather than how long you idle.
One honest note up front: the Prospector's yield started life about a hundred times too high. First playtests turned it into a firehose, so it's been cut hard. If you mined in the first couple of days, the rate you remember is gone on purpose - this is the number I most expect to keep tuning.
Then build the machine that does it for you
Hand-prospecting is the tutorial for the real system. Research Forward Operations at HQ level 5 and you can deploy out and found a Forward Mining Outpost directly on a breach node - a second kind of base, built to dig. Park a Static Miner on it to pull shards automatically, a Refinery to process them, and run Haulers to carry the haul back home. Mine, refine, haul, defend - a full loop running out in the open where anyone can see it. That last word matters: an outpost sat on a rich node is a target, so you hold it with a garrison or you lose it. It's the first structure in the game that's meant to be fought over.
Somewhere for the shards to go
A resource is only interesting if it buys something you want. At HQ level 10 you can build Aegis Command, the Concord's high-tier production hub, and it fields the first units in the game that aren't trained at the Barracks - both paid for in Breach Shard. The Enforcer is a heavy assault walker: slow, heavily armoured, a huge health pool, built to plant itself on an objective and refuse to move. The Censor is its opposite - a light, fast skirmisher for catching what the anchor can't. The top of the tech tree finally has something standing at the end of it, and Breach Shard is the toll to reach it.
The honest caveats
This is a brand-new economy bolted onto a world that's a week old, so there's a lot of fresh surface and it's all alpha. The numbers - shard yields, outpost costs, the cap on each base, the elite units' own stats (still flagged provisional while I sim them) - are knobs, and I'll be turning them as I watch people mine. If a Forward Mining Outpost feels too cheap to hold or too expensive to bother with, if the Prospector's now too stingy after the nerf, if the Elite Tier lands too early or too late - that's exactly the feedback that makes the next patch.
Go stake a claim on a breach node. Build something worth defending out where it's exposed. And tell me where it breaks.
